Looking at Credit Karma data around national credit limits, from our more than 40 million members, we’ve found two commonalities: people with the highest credit limits tend to live in cities with both higher than average incomes and retail sales.
The cities on our top 15 lists are spread from California and Arizona to Illinois and Connecticut. Only one major metropolitan city makes the list. Despite their geographic diversity they share high median household incomes, often at least double the national average according to data from the US Census Bureau.
Many of the cities are also notably spend-happy, with roughly twice the retail sales per capita than the national average. The combination of deeper pockets and an apparent willingness to spend could explain why residents of these cities have the highest credit limits in the country.
