What you need to know about the Citi® Secured Mastercard®

Citi’s secured credit card is a super-basic card that can help you build a positive credit history if you use it responsibly.

Approval with limited credit history

The Citi® Secured Mastercard® was designed for people with minimal credit history. Instead of running credit reports for approval, Citi will review things like income and debt, any credit information, and other factors viewed as important to lending you a line of credit. But if you’ve had a bankruptcy in the previous two years, you won’t qualify for this card.

Build credit history with responsible use

All credit activity is reported to the three major credit bureaus. Making your payments on time and in full can help build up your credit history — and you may eventually qualify for an unsecured card.

Required security deposit

The Citi® Secured Mastercard® requires collateral to reduce the risk of you not paying off your credit balance. This is what your security deposit is.

If you fail to pay your card balance, Citi can use the money from your security deposit to pay your bill. It’ll likely close your account if this happens. Your security deposit depends on your history, but it will be a minimum of $200.

The security deposit is usually refundable — either after a certain amount of time of careful use or once you close and pay off your account. That means you shouldn’t rely on getting your security deposit back soon.

High APR

At a variable 26.74%, the Citi® Secured Mastercard® has a high annual percentage rate (the amount of money that you pay a creditor to borrow money from it) for both purchases and balance transfers. It’s higher than average, but that’s typical for secured cards.

But if you pay your card off in full and on time every month, you may not have to worry about the APR at all.

What else you need to know

Who this card is good for

The Citi® Secured Mastercard® credit card is a bare-bones secured credit card for establishing credit. If you’re a newbie credit cardholder, this card may offer the tools and resources you need to build and maintain a positive credit history.

The key phrase for this card is “bare bones” — there are other secured cards out there that offer better perks.

Not sure this is the card for you? Consider these alternatives.

I love this card

Credit Karma Member

7/1/17 I went with this card because the capital one card wouldn't approve me (collections from capital one 4 years ago) and the beginning was rough. They said my application will take further review and they will have an answer for me in 1 week. By day 4 the 200$ was taken out of my account. Still no word on if I was approved or not. 2 weeks went by, still no update. I called at 2 1/2 weeks and they said my application is still pending. I stated the deposit has already been pulled and I don't understand why they would pull and not approve the application. The customer service was very friendly. Few days later I was approved. Took just over a week after that to receive the card. Two weeks after that I get an email from Credit Karma saying my score changed. I looked and this card jumped me up 35 points. I have 2 things in collections and a judgement of 3,000. My score started at 451. I have not paid anything (yet) and my score after one month of opening the card is 532. This card has jumped me over 80 points in a month. Pretty happy. Update 11/2/17 Okay! It's been 5 months since I've had this card, I have not paid any of my collections. One medical and one from capital one for almost $500. My score is now 600. This card has not only raised my credit score 150 points, but I am also now approved with Capital One secured card! I only needed to give them $49 for a deposit and have a $200 limit. I originally wanted the capital one card but was denied but approved for this one. I cannot express how happy I am to be on the road to recovery on my credit! All payments made on time, never any issues, and my new card will be here in a few weeks! Let's see how fast my score raises now! ????????????

Avoid this card unless you're desperate.

If you want an awesome secured cc, then go with Discover. I opened the Citi card in the summer of 2017 with a $600 deposit. I've never missed a payment, use this card frequently, many times I'd pay the balance in full with $500 payments, and 18 months later I got a letter from Citi saying they need to hold my security deposit for another year. On the other hand, I opened Discover's secured "it" card with only $200. 8 months later, I graduated and they gave me a credit line in the thousands.
