BankAmericard® credit card: Core features to know

If your top priority is to save money while financing a big-ticket expense or paying down credit card debt, the BankAmericard® credit card is an excellent choice.

Long 0% intro APR offer

The BankAmericard® credit card is primarily a balance transfer card, with one of the longest intro APR offers on the market.

The card offers an introductory 0% APR promotion for 18 billing cycles on balance transfers made within the first 60 days after the account opens, as well as on purchases. After that, the ongoing variable APR for both is 15.49% to 25.49%. And the balance transfer fee? 3% of the amount of each transaction during the first 60 days. After that, the fee is 4%.

If you transfer a high-interest credit card balance to BankAmericard® credit card, you might be able to save a significant amount of money. But do the math before you transfer a balance — and make sure to include the balance transfer fee in your calculation. Though the long intro period may appear to be an enticing offer, it’s good to be aware of any balance transfer risks before you decide to apply for the BankAmericard® credit card.

No rewards program

Depending on how you use the card’s introductory APR promotion, you can save a lot of money on interest over 18 billing cycles. But because the card doesn’t offer a rewards program, you might have a difficult time getting value from the card after the promotional period ends.

If you’re not worried about rewards, this feature won’t be a deal breaker. But if you want to get a little back whenever you use your card, you might want to consider other options.

On the other hand, the lack of a rewards program can help you focus on paying off a transferred balance because there won’t be other features to tempt you into using the card for too many new purchases.

Potential for a high APR

Introductory APR promotions can feel like a lifesaver if you need time to pay down a credit card balance. But if you carry a balance on the BankAmericard® credit card after the intro period ends, you could get hit with a regular variable APR of 15.49% to 25.49% on whatever is left over, as well as any purchases or other transfers you’ve made.

Other card details to know

For the most part, the BankAmericard® credit card is relatively straightforward without a lot of frills. But there are a handful of other benefits that can add value, including …

  • No penalty APR if you miss a payment
  • Compatible with Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay
  • Free access to your monthly FICO® credit score from TransUnion
  • $0 annual fee

Who this card is good for

The BankAmericard® credit card does one thing and does it well: promotional APRs. So if you’re in need of a card with an introductory APR offer, put this card on your shortlist.

But remember: The card doesn’t have a rewards program. So if that feature is on your wish list, the BankAmericard® credit card might not be your best choice.

Not sure this is the card for you? Consider these alternatives.

If you’re on the fence about the BankAmericard® credit card, or just want some options to compare it with, consider these cards.

  • Citi Double Cash® Card: If you’re planning to do a balance transfer but also want great rewards, consider this card.
  • Wells Fargo Reflect® Card: This card comes with a long intro APR offer, plus an incentive to make on-time payments throughout the introductory period.

Just from "all" of the negative reviews, I would "NOT" apply for this credit card. I recommend "Discover". "Never" have I ever had a problem with Discover when it comes to my card. Customer Service, I would give them a 99.99% rating. I have other credit cards, and I "still" say that Discover is the best.

Amazon Prime Visa review

Updated December 6, 2024

This date may not reflect recent changes in individual terms.

Written by: Louis DeNicola

What you should know about the Amazon Prime Visa

No annual fee … sort of

Technically, the Amazon Prime Visa doesn’t have an annual fee. But there’s a catch: You must be an Amazon Prime member to apply for the card, which costs $139 per year (or $14.99 per month) for a nonstudent membership.

Of course, that $139 goes toward more than just maintaining your card each year. Amazon Prime benefits include free shipping, Prime Video and additional savings at Whole Foods Market, along with a long list of other perks.

If you’re already an Amazon Prime member, then the cost isn’t a concern. But if you’re considering signing up just so that you can apply for the card, think about the cost carefully. A different cash back card with a lower annual fee (or a cash back card with no annual fee at all) might make more sense (and cents!).

Cardholders who cancel their Amazon Prime membership can keep the card, but they earn lower cash back rates in certain categories.

You can earn a lot of rewards

The number of points you can earn with the Amazon Prime Visa depends on where you shop.

  • 5% back on purchases at Amazon.com and Whole Foods
  • 5% back on Chase travel purchases
  • 2% back on purchases at gas stations, restaurants and local transit/commuting
  • 1% back on all other purchases

You can then redeem those rewards toward an eligible purchase on Amazon.com. But it’s worth noting that you have other options for redemption, like cash back, gift cards and travel. In these cases, $1 of rewards is equal to 100 rewards points, and vice-versa.

In other words, you can get the same value out of this card with cash back as you could with eligible Amazon.com purchases. That makes this card more versatile than many store-branded credit cards, which usually require that you use your rewards only at the store and its affiliates.

Similarly, while other cards offer 5% cash back on purchases, they may switch which stores or categories you’ll earn with throughout the year and limit how much you can earn.

The Amazon Prime Visa offers unlimited earning potential. Plus, Amazon sells a wide variety of products.

You can use this card anywhere Visa is accepted

Some store-branded or retail credit cards are only accepted at the associated store, and possibly with other affiliated brands.

But you can use the Amazon Prime Visa for purchases anywhere that Visa is accepted.

A potentially high APR could cost you

The Amazon Prime Visa has a variable APR of 19.74% - 28.49% on purchases and balance transfers.

A high APR isn’t a concern if you pay your bill on time and in full each month. But if you carry a balance, then you might wind up paying a lot in interest. We don’t recommend using credit cards for purchases you can’t afford to pay off by your due date, but the APR is still a consideration if you have to cover emergency expenses that don’t easily fit into your budget.

Other Amazon cards to consider

There are a few more details that might help you decide if the Amazon Prime Visa is a good fit for you.

There are other Amazon credit cards out there

The Amazon Prime Visa isn’t the only Amazon card — there are several choices you can consider.

  • Amazon.com Store Card
  • Amazon Prime Store Card
  • Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card
  • Amazon Prime Visa

You can only use the two store cards on Amazon.com.

The other Amazon Visa card is similar to the Amazon Prime Visa in that you can use it elsewhere, but it doesn’t require an Amazon Prime membership. It also only gives you 3% back at Amazon.com, Whole Foods and Chase Travel.

Also, know that you’ll be considered only for the card you apply for, so be sure to apply directly for the Amazon Prime Visa if that’s the card you want.

Part of an Amazon Household with Prime? You might still qualify.

Even if you’re not the main Prime accountholder, you might qualify if you have Prime benefits that someone shares with you via an Amazon Household (which allows you to share Prime benefits between members of the same household, including up to two adults, four teens and four children). This could lower the card’s “annual fee” for you, depending on if (and how much) you contribute to that Prime membership fee.

If you choose to remove the card from your Amazon account, you’ll no longer earn 5% back on Amazon or Whole Foods Market purchases. You can relink the card to get the higher rate back, though.

Understanding your points and redemption options

We’ve touched on earning points with the Amazon Prime Visa — now let’s take a look at how you can use your points. The good news is that there are lots of options.

On Amazon.com, you can redeem your points to pay for part or all of your eligible purchase.

To use your points at Amazon.com, select the Amazon Prime Visa as your payment method when checking out. You can then choose the dollar amount you want to cover using your points. Using your points this way gets you a redemption value of $1 per 100 points.

You can also redeem your points for cash back, gift cards or travel. The redemption value may vary for other types of redemptions, but 100 points also equals $1 for Amazon.com, travel, gift cards and cash back.

Who is this card good for?

If you do most of your household shopping on Amazon.com and grocery shopping at Whole Foods, the Amazon Prime Visa could be a match.

Even if you only occasionally shop at these stores but tend to make large purchases when you do (like doing all your holiday shopping on Amazon.com), it could still make sense to get the card because it technically doesn’t have an annual fee.

But the rewards probably won’t be worth it if you don’t think you’d get much use out of an Amazon Prime membership or you’d wind up carrying a balance from month to month. Make sure you can afford to pay off your card on time and in full each month, and don’t get tempted to make more (or costlier) purchases just because you’ll earn bonus points.

While there isn’t a foreign transaction fee, you also won’t earn a higher rewards rate on travel-related purchases with the Amazon Prime Visa. It might make sense to keep a travel rewards credit card in your wallet for when you’re booking travel or you’re away from home.

Not sure this is the card for you? Consider these alternatives.

The Amazon Prime Visa isn’t a perfect fit for everyone. If you’re looking for a new card but haven’t fallen in love yet, take a look at these other options.

Love this card

Credit Karma Member

After seeing the negative reviews, I feel compelled to write one of my own. I notice that the negative reviews are from people who were denied the card, not from actual users. If you have a beef because you were denied, don't blame the card. It's a great card to have, especially if you shop on Amazon. There is no annual fee, and you get 5% back on Amazon purchases. The APR is high, but that's true of most cards these days, and if you pay off your balance every month like I do, it's not an issue.

Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express review

Updated December 20, 2024

This date may not reflect recent changes in individual terms.

Written by: Tim Devaney

6 things to know about the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express

1. Earn cash back with no annual fee

If you’re on a budget and trying to cut back on spending, the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express gives you a chance to earn cash back on your everyday purchases with no annual fee.

You’ll earn …

  • 3% cash back on up to $6,000 each year in purchases at U.S. supermarkets (after that, you’ll only get 1% back)
  • 3% cash back on up to $6,000 each year in purchases at U.S. gas stations (after that, 1% back)
  • 3% cash back on up to on up to $6,000 each year in U.S. online retail purchases (after that, 1% back)
  • 1% cash back on other purchases

2. No annual fee to weigh against your cash back

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express charges a $0 annual fee.

This gives the card a huge advantage over those that charge annual fees. While you might not earn as much cash back as you could with other cards, at least there’s no annual fee cutting into your earnings, and you don’t have to juggle your spending to figure out whether or not the card is worth it.

3. Limited redemption options

You’ll have to redeem your rewards for statement credits or during checkout at Amazon.com.

If you’re looking for more flexible redemption, check out a cash back card like the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card instead.

4. Average welcome bonus

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express offers a welcome bonus of $200 as a statement credit after you spend $2,000 on purchases in the first 6 months from your account opening.

This is better than nothing, but we’ve seen better welcome bonuses from cards that charge annual fees (and even a few that don’t).

5. Low intro APR offer could help you in a pinch

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express features an introductory 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 15 months.

After the intro expires though, your APR on purchases and balance transfers spikes to a variable rate of 18.24% - 29.24%. There’s a balance transfer fee: Either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater. And balance transfers must be requested within 60 days of account opening to qualify for the intro rate.

6. Not a good option for international travel

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express charges a foreign transaction fee of 2.7%, and American Express cards may not be as widely accepted abroad as cards on the Visa or Mastercard networks.

So if you’re planning a big trip, one of our favorite travel credit cards with no annual fee might be a better bet.

Who this card is good for

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express caters to people who are trying to save money by cooking at home and only driving every now and then.

If you’re on a budget, there’s no pressure to overspend to try to make up for an annual fee.

But if you go out to eat on a regular basis, you might be better off with another cash back credit card that rewards you for dining.

Not sure this card is right for you? Consider these alternatives.

If the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express isn’t right for you, you might be interested in one of these other credit cards.

Don’t take credit karmas odds too seriously

Credit Karma Member

I have wanted this card for about 6 years. Applied once about 5 years ago and was denied. Recently American Express add the ability to see if you’ll be approved with no impact to your score. Credit karma said my approval odds were “poor” I decided why not? And gave it a shot on their website. Within minutes I was approved and able to accept the card (they don’t preform a hard inquiry UNTIL you accept the card) I was approved at a $2000 dollar limit with just a 687 score. So if you want this card don’t listen to credit karma, head to their website and give it a shot!

Fairly easy to apply. Some have said you will know your credit limit before you accept, this is not the case. You can find out once you accept their card. Once everything goes through, you will get an email asking you to log in and register your account. I tried for 2 days before I called and found out you have to wait for your card to arrive. The email does not say this, but don't waste your time. Once I got the card and registered, I attempted to do a balance transfer, which is why I applied in the first place. You can't do this online so I called. I had a decent credit limit, but they will only allow a small amount for balance transfers, about a 1/4 of my credit limit. It doesn't make any sense. Hindsight, I would not have applied if I had known that. Just be aware.

Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express review

4 things to consider about the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

1. The welcome bonus can jump-start your cash back

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express comes with a $250 statement credit if you spend $3,000 on eligible purchases during the first 6 months from your account opening.

The welcome bonus could help you start piling up cash back quickly, but in the long run, the biggest opportunity to earn cash back may lie in other regular purchases you make.

2. Bonus categories for groceries, streaming services, transit and gas

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express can earn you rewards dollars that you can redeem for a statement credit or when checking out at Amazon.

Groceries: 6% cash back on up to $6,000 you spend each year on purchases at U.S. supermarkets (1% back after that).

If you like to cook at home, you could earn plenty of cash back from your grocery purchases with this card. But keep in mind that U.S. supermarkets don’t include warehouse clubs or superstores like Walmart.

Digital subscriptions: 6% cash back on select U.S. streaming services, including popular services like Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Apple Music, ESPN+ and Kindle Unlimited.

You can get cash back for dozens of these subscriptions. But how many streaming services do you actually use? If you’re the type of person who only purchases HBO for one month a year to watch “Game of Thrones,” you might not notice a difference.

Transit and gas: 3% cash back on transit (including trains, buses, tolls and even rideshares and parking garages) as well as 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations.

It’s worth noting that the 3% cash back on transit is aimed at local transportation, not long-distance travel to your next vacation spot. So it doesn’t apply to things like airplanes, cruises or car rentals.

Outside of these categories, you’ll earn 1% cash back on your other purchases.

3. Is the annual fee worth it?

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express comes with a $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95 after that. But if you spend enough in the card’s bonus categories, you can more than make up for it.

You could break even on the annual fee with the rewards from your grocery purchases alone if you spend about $1,600 each year at U.S. supermarkets (or roughly $30 per week).

On the other hand, if you spend more than $115 a week on groceries, you could run up against the $6,000-per-year cap for 6% cash back on purchases at U.S supermarkets.

Compare cash back credit cards on Credit Karma to see if there’s another card that suits your spending better.

4. Planning a big purchase? The 0% intro APR could help

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is more than a cash back card. If you’re planning to make a big purchase and you need time to pay it off, it could also help you save money on interest charges.

Of course, we recommend that you pay off your credit card balance in full by the due date each month to avoid paying any interest on purchases. But that’s not always possible.

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express offers a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 months after account opening. But make sure you pay off your purchases and transfers before the intro APR expires, or you’ll be charged a variable regular APR of 18.24% - 29.24% on both. Balance transfers must be requested within 60 days of account opening to qualify for the intro rate and there’s also balance transfer fee: Either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater.

Who this card is good for

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express could be particularly fruitful for three types of people.

  1. People who like to cook at home
  2. People who subscribe to certain streaming services
  3. Commuters who drive to work or take public transportation

If you spend a lot of money on groceries, streaming and commuting, the cash back could add up quickly. But if that’s not where you spend your money, other cash back credit cards could benefit you more.

Not sure this card is right for you? Consider these alternatives.

If the annual fee for the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is too expensive, here are a few other cards that might be a better fit for your wallet.

*Approval Odds are not a guarantee of approval. Credit Karma determines Approval Odds by comparing your credit profile to other Credit Karma members who were approved for the card shown, or whether you meet certain criteria determined by the lender. Of course, there’s no such thing as a sure thing, but knowing your Approval Odds may help you narrow down your choices. For example, you may not be approved because you don’t meet the lender’s “ability to pay standard” after they verify your income and employment; or, you already have the maximum number of accounts with that specific lender.

Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card review

5 things to know about the Chase Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card

1. Cash back can help you offset business expenses

If you’re on a tight budget, the Chase Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card could help you offset some of your business expenses by redeeming your cash back as a statement credit.

  • Sign-up bonus — Earn a sign-up bonus of $750 cash back after spending $6,000 on purchases during the first 3 months after account opening. You can redeem your cash back as a statement credit, or have it directly deposited to most U.S. checking and savings accounts.
  • Simple cash back — You’ll generally earn an unlimited 1.5% cash back on every purchase you make for your business.
  • Employee cards — If you’ve got a staff, you can offer employee cards for no additional fee. This way you’ll earn the same 1.5% cash back on all of their work-related purchases. (But make sure you only give employee cards to those you trust because you’ll be on the hook to repay every penny they spend.)

The Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card comes without an annual fee, so you don’t have to worry about that driving up your costs.

2. Simple cash back can help you focus on running your business

Some business cash back cards have confusing reward structures that take a lot of brainpower to master.

But not the Chase Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card.

With this card, earning cash back is simple: All you have to do is swipe your card and you’ll earn the same flat rate on every purchase you make for your business. The one exception is Lyft rides, which you can earn 5% cash back on through March 2025.

That should leave you with more time to focus on running your company.

3. It’s not the highest cash back rate

The Chase Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card makes it simple to earn cash back. But if you’re willing to put a little more effort into maximizing your rewards, you might be able to earn more cash back with another business credit card that earns more rewards in certain bonus categories, like the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card or Ink Business Cash® Credit Card.

Ask yourself what’s more important to you: crunching the numbers so you can earn more rewards, or spending that time focusing on growing your business?

4. Intro APR offer could help you grow your business

The Chase Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card could help you grow your small business.

If your company is short on cash, the Chase Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card could provide the short-term financing you need to help you get up and running or finance a new project. That’s because the card offers an introductory 0% APR on purchases for the first 12 months your account is open.

After the promotional rate expires, the purchase APR jumps to a regular variable rate of 17.74% - 23.74%. So make sure you have a plan to pay back what you borrow before the intro offer ends or else you could end up paying a lot in interest.

5. Not great for business trips

You might want to think twice before bringing the Chase Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card on your next business trip.

The card charges a foreign transaction fee of 3% — so if you’re traveling overseas, you’ll pay even more on business purchases you make with this card.

And unlike some of the other Chase Ultimate Rewards® credit cards, this card doesn’t allow you to transfer your points to airline or hotel transfer partners to redeem through their programs. While you can redeem your points for travel directly through the Chase portal, using transfer partners will require you to move your points to a different Chase Ultimate Rewards card that includes the benefit.

If you travel for work on a regular basis, you might be better off with the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card, which charges no foreign transaction fees and allows you to redeem your points through transfer partners.

Who this card is good for

The Chase Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card may be helpful for business owners who want to offset expenses with simple cash back that helps them stay focused on running their company.

But if you’re trying to maximize your points or you travel a lot for work and you’re looking for perks, other business cards out there could be a better fit — like our picks for the best credit cards for business travel.

Not sure this card is right for you? Consider these alternative business cards.

If you’re having second thoughts about the Chase Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card, consider one of these business credit cards instead.

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card review

Updated November 21, 2024

This date may not reflect recent changes in individual terms.

Written by: Tim Devaney

4 things to know about the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card

1. Annual free night award can help cover the annual fee

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card comes with a $95 annual fee, but you may find it fairly easy to make up for that upfront cost from just one benefit. That’s because you’ll qualify for one free night award each account anniversary.

The free night award can be used at participating midtier hotels on rooms that cost up to 35,000 points.

2. Big sign-up bonus, but no hotel credits

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card offers a sign-up bonus of 3 Free Night Awards (each night valued up to 50,000 points) after spending $3,000 on eligible purchases during the first 3 months from account opening.

But there is no annual hotel credit to provide extra ongoing value at Marriott hotels.

3. Earn more points for Marriott stays

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card offers six points for every $1 you spend on purchases at participating Marriott hotels, and two points for every $1 spent on all other purchases. Plus, you’ll earn three points per $1 spent on gas station, grocery store and restaurant purchases, up to $6,000 spent each year.

Because the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card also gives you complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status, you can earn another 11 points for every $1 you spend at participating Marriott hotels, in addition to the points you earn with your credit card. That’s 10 base points for every $1 you spend on qualifying purchases, plus a 10% bonus for Silver Elite status.

If your qualifying purchases are at participating Marriott hotels, you could earn a total of 17 points for every $1 you spend at Marriott.

4. Turn hotel loyalty into a more comfortable stay

That automatic Silver Elite status that you can earn with the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card also entitles you to priority late checkouts — based on availability — at participating Marriott hotels. This perk could come in handy when you have a late afternoon or evening flight and would rather relax than pass the time with some other activity.

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card also offers the opportunity to upgrade to Bonvoy’s Gold status each calendar year that you either spend $35,000 on qualifying purchases. Gold status comes with the added benefit of receiving complimentary room upgrades — based on availability — at participating Marriott hotels.

Understanding your points and redemption options

Marriott Bonvoy points can be used to book rewards nights at Marriott hotels. We estimate these points to be worth approximately 0.75 cents each, according to Credit Karma’s point valuations, but the actual value you get depends on how you redeem your points.

That value could depend on where you choose to stay. Marriott’s rewards program features several categories of hotels, so there’s some variety in your options.

No matter where you stay, you can make your points earned with the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card go further by taking advantage of Marriott’s fifth-night-free promotion. If you book a five-night stay using your points, you need to redeem only enough points to pay for the first four nights because the fifth night will be free.

You can also transfer points to one of Marriott’s participating airline partners, or redeem through Marriott’s rewards program for rental cars, gift cards, charitable donations and special experiences. But you’ll typically get more bang for your buck when you redeem your points for a hotel room.

Who this card is good for

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card could be a good choice for regular Marriott guests who are more interested in value than maximizing luxury.

While the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card doesn’t feature countless credits or fancy perks, it offers plenty of opportunities to capitalize on your Marriott loyalty with practical benefits like the free night award and late checkouts. You’d also be able to get that value without paying a premium for perks you might not use, like spa treatments and hotel lounge access.

Not sure this card is right for you? Consider these alternatives.

If the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card isn’t for you, you might be interested in one of these other hotel credit cards.

Merrick notes that you may not be approved for the card if you have a pending bankruptcy or if you owe any outstanding taxes.

Reports to all three major credit bureaus

The Merrick Bank Secured Credit Card may help you build your credit because it reports to all three major credit bureaus.

Making on-time payments can help you build a strong credit history, which could increase your chances of upgrading to an unsecured credit card down the road.

Purchase APR isn’t great

This card has a 22.95% variable APR for purchases. That’s not much higher than the average credit card APR of 21.51.%, according to Federal Reserve data from May 2024 — but it’s not low by any stretch. Some secured credit cards may come with higher or lower APRs than the Merrick Bank Secured Credit Card offers, so you’ll want to consider your options carefully.

And if you don’t want to pay interest on your purchases, you can take advantage of the card’s grace period by paying off your statement balance, which Merrick Bank calls your “New Balance,” in full by the payment due date each month.

Annual fee

When you get the Merrick Bank Secured Credit Card, you’ll pay the first year’s annual fee of $36 right away. After the first year, you’ll be billed $3 per month for the annual fee.

One thing to keep in mind: Your first-year annual fee is taken out of your initial credit limit, so this fee can eat into a significant portion of your available credit. For example, if you make an initial security deposit of $200, you’ll have an available credit line of only $164 until you pay your balance.

Minimum security deposit required

If you’re approved for the Merrick Bank Secured Credit Card, you’ll have to put down a security deposit of at least $200. Your initial credit line will be equal to your security deposit, and you can put down up to $3,000.

Coming up with $200 or more may seem like a big task when you’re trying to build your credit. But a larger credit limit gives you more room to make purchases without negatively affecting your credit utilization rate. Ideally, you’d want to keep your utilization rate below 30%.

Other factors to consider

Here are a few other things you may want to consider before applying for the Merrick Bank Secured Credit Card.

  • This card doesn’t come with any rewards.
  • You’ll have no fraud liability for unauthorized charges.
  • You may be charged a returned- or late-payment fee of up to $40.

Who the Merrick Bank Secured Credit Card is good for

The Merrick Bank Secured Credit Card may be a good fit if you want to establish your credit history. While the card’s 22.95% variable APR on purchases isn’t great, it might be in the same ballpark APR-wise as some other secured credit cards. Just remember that the card comes with a $36 annual fee (which is billed upfront when you get the card, then $3 per month after the first year).

If you don’t plan to carry a balance, other secured credit cards may be a better fit for your situation.

Not sure this is the card for you? Consider these alternatives.

If the Merrick Bank Secured Credit Card isn’t the best fit for your particular situation, consider these other options instead.

Great card, best interest rate!

Credit Karma Member

In the process of rebuilding my credit, I applied for several cards. I was approved for most including this one. Reasonable credit limit ($1200) and best interest rate of them all (27.99%). Application was simple, immediate decision, quick shipping of card, and easy app. Highly recommend

Don’t Apply

Credit Karma Member

For days, I hesitated to apply for this card because CreditKarma said my chances were “excellent” and “if you don’t get approved for this card, we’ll give you &50” Well, I should have trusted my instincts… Not only did I apply for this card and was rejected, the second I was rejected the website refreshed and said “my chances were “poor”! Why could Credit Karma not tell me my chances were poor in the first place? Now I have an inquiry on my credit report which will lower an already low score! I am very disappointed with Credit Karma’s false claims. I will not apply for another credit card until I get my score back up to 750 or better… I don’t care about some phony “$50 guarantee”…This is false advertising's on the part of Credit Karma as far as I’m concerned.

What you should know about The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express

The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express is an excellent choice for small-business owners. Here’s what you should know.

Rewards program

The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express offers two Membership Rewards points on everyday business purchases you make on up to $50,000 per year. After that, you’ll earn one point per $1.

With this structure, you don’t have to worry about making sure your expenses align with your credit card’s bonus rewards categories. But if your business expenses far exceed the card’s $50,000 cap, it may not provide as much value as a card without a cap.

Introductory 0% APR

When you first get the card, you’ll receive a 0% introductory APR on purchases for 12 months from account opening. After that, your APR for purchases will be a variable rate, currently 17.49% - 25.49%.

Free employee cards

On top of the $0 annual fee for this card, American Express allows you to add employee cards for no extra fee. You can place spending limits on each card online or by calling customer service.

Who this card is good for

The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express has a straightforward offering, making it an excellent choice for new business owners and businesses that don’t have a lot of expenses.

With the introductory purchase APR, you can finance necessary startup costs and pay them off interest-free — so long as you pay off the balance in full and on time before the APR offer expires.

Between those savings and a high rewards rate on purchases before you hit the cap, the card could make up for what it lacks over time.

Not sure this is the card for you? Consider these alternatives.

If you’re uncertain whether The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express is the best fit for your business, compare it with other business credit cards on Credit Karma. Here are a few of our favorites.

  • Ink Business Cash® Credit Card: We found that this card could be a good choice for business owners who have a big upcoming purchase, or who spend a lot on office supplies.
  • Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card: If you’re a traveler, this card could help you get to your next trip faster with its flexible rewards program.

Was approved pretty much instantly with a $35,000.00 limit. Had a excellent rating on chance of acceptance. Credit Karma score of 803 which is wrong. Actual credit score is always several points higher than Credit Karma states it is. But either way I was approved and surprised by the $35000.00 limit.

USAA Rate Advantage Credit Card review

    Updated November 3, 2024

This date may not reflect recent changes in individual terms.

    Written by: Kim Porter

What you need to know about the USAA Rate Advantage Credit Card

The USAA Rate Advantage Credit Card is a no-frills credit card with a potentially low APR for purchases and balances and no annual fee. But it lacks intro APR offers for purchases and there’s no rewards program. It’s also available only to USAA members.

    For USAA members only

First, it’s important to know that not just anyone can get this card. To apply for the USAA Rate Advantage Credit Card, you’ll need to become a member of USAA. Membership is limited to cadets, midshipmen, veterans, active military members and eligible family members.

If you don’t fit this description, you’ll have to look for another credit card from another issuer.

Potential for a low APR, but no guarantee

The USAA Rate Advantage Credit Card has a regular variable APR of 11.4% - 25.4% on purchases, balance transfers and cash advances.

You’ll generally need excellent credit to qualify for the lowest interest rates, which could help you pay less interest in case you need to carry a balance. But if you end up with an APR at the high end of the range, the interest costs could get expensive if you carry a balance from month to month.

In other words, the USAA Rate Advantage Credit Card doesn’t guarantee a “rate advantage,” despite the promise of the card’s name. The lower end is below the average APR for consumer credit cards listed by the Federal Reserve. But the high end of the card’s APR range includes rates more commonly seen from cards specifically marketed for building credit.

Before applying, consider what kind of APR you might qualify for with your credit history. If you have some derogatory marks on your credit reports, you might be better off looking for a card that offers more certainty in its rates.

    Special APR during military deployment

There’s good news for active-duty military members: Eligible cardholders may qualify for lower rates with the USAA Rate Advantage Credit Card, at least while deployed. If you have a balance on your card when you enter active duty, USAA offers a 4% APR on any outstanding balances from before deployment. That’s lower than the 6% APR for credit cards guaranteed by the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act.

But anything charged to the card during or after active duty will see the standard rate you qualify for as a cardholder.

    Some fees, but not many

When you use the USAA Rate Advantage Credit Card, you won’t have to pay foreign transaction fees, penalty APRs or over-the-limit fees. Fee-free foreign transactions could be especially beneficial for service members stationed abroad.

There’s also no annual fee. But note that the card also lacks a rewards program and sign-up bonus.

Cardholders are responsible for a handful of fees, including a late payment fee of up to $35 and a balance transfer fee of 5% of the amount of each Balance Transfer. There’s also a cash advance fee of 5% of the amount of each Cash Advance. Fee waived when transferring funds electronically to your USAA Bank deposit account. It’s worth noting that the cash advance fee it’s not applied when transferring the funds to a USAA checking account.

Other things to know about the USAA Rate Advantage Credit Card

Though there’s no rewards program, this credit card offers a lineup of core benefits. Here are a few.

    • Shopping protections, including price protection and an extended warranty
    • Coverage when you travel, such as travel accident and baggage delay insurance

Who this card is good for

The USAA Rate Advantage Credit Card doesn’t come with many bells and whistles. But it could be a good fit if you’re not looking for rewards — and if you have the credit profile to qualify for the lower end of its APR range. That’s especially true if you think a rewards program might entice you into spending more just to earn more points or cash back.

It could also be useful for anyone who’d like to build credit without distractions. Just be careful about carrying a balance, because this card could end up costing you in interest charges, especially if you only qualify for an APR on the higher end of its range.

Of course, many of these details might not matter as much to you as working with an organization that understands the details of military life. Aside from its credit card offerings, USAA also provides benefits like deployment advice, advance military pay, free limited home security during deployment and the option to apply for VA home loans.

Not sure this is the card for you? Consider these alternatives.

    Credit Karma False Ad?

    Credit Karma Member

Saw an ad for this card and my “very good” chances of being accepted and got excited! Being a USAA member since 2008, it made all the sense in the world to apply. I typically don’t apply for the lesser known / high fee/high rate cards, and look at USAA as legitimate. I was denied for the card (shouldn’t have been surprised with my -600 score) then again I went with what Credit Karma said. Looking at other reviews I think it’s best to approach with more caution. I anticipate my score dropping lower… back to the drawing board! Three stars is a middle of the road review because of my appreciation for USAA but the false hope from CK.

    United℠ Business Card review

    Updated June 13, 2024

This date may not reflect recent changes in individual terms.

    Written by: Tim Devaney

4 things to know about the United℠ Business Card

    1. You can turn the sign-up bonus into flights

The United℠ Business Card offers new cardholders 75,000 bonus miles after spending $5,000 on purchases during the first 3 months after account opening.

    2. Earn more miles on common business expenses

When you make United Airlines purchases, you’ll earn two miles for every $1 you spend on the United℠ Business Card.

You’ll also earn two miles for every $1 you spend on dining, purchases at gas stations, local transit and office supply stores. And you’ll earn one mile per $1 on all other purchases.

Depending on your business expenses, you might find you can earn miles fairly quickly. Just consider whether these bonus categories match your business needs, or if you could get better rewards rates from another card.

    3. There’s an annual fee

The United℠ Business Card charges card members a $0 Intro Annual Fee for the First Year, then a $99 annual fee. Depending on the perks you use and the amount you charge to the card, you might be able to make up for this cost fairly quickly.

    4. Save with checked bags and priority boarding

If you’re looking for perks on your flight, the United℠ Business Card brings them with free checked bags and priority boarding.

Whenever you fly with your card, you and a companion on the same reservation will each be able to check one bag free. United charges $35 each way for a checked bag on roundtrip domestic flights, so this benefit could be worth as much as $140 on one round-trip flight.

The United℠ Business Card also includes priority boarding, so you can find your seat and settle in before it gets crowded. Without the card or accompanying airline status, priority boarding isn’t available unless you pay a premium on your ticket.

Just keep in mind that these benefits are only worth something if you intend to use them. If you don’t check bags or don’t mind boarding a little later, the true value of these perks might not be worth much to you.

Other features of the United℠ Business Card

    • Employee cards at no charge — The United℠ Business Card offers $0 employee cards. Your account will earn the same rewards rate on these purchases, too.
    • Two United Club lounge passes per year — Each year, the United℠ Business Card also comes with two one-time passes to the United Club airport lounge. Individual visits cost $59, so this benefit is worth $118. But not every airport has a United Club, and the card only provides the two passes, so you’ll have to pay to gain entry after that.
    • No foreign transaction fees — The United℠ Business Card doesn’t charge any foreign transaction fees, which could save your business money when you travel overseas.
    • No introductory APR offer — Some business credit cards can help your company finance big purchases with an intro 0% purchase APR — but not the United℠ Business Card. If you’re looking to build a business without paying interest right away, you might want to look elsewhere.

What qualifies you for a business credit card?

The United℠ Business Card is intended for business owners, but that doesn’t mean you have to run a Fortune 500 company to qualify.

In fact, many people who work for themselves may not realize they qualify for a business credit card. Whether you freelance, drive for Uber or are starting a side job, if you’re self-employed or a sole proprietor, you might be eligible to apply for a business credit card.

This could help you keep your business and personal expenses separate while earning rewards for your professional spending.

Not sure this card is right for you? Consider these alternatives.

If the United℠ Business Card isn’t the right credit card for you, you might want to consider one of these other credit cards instead.

Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card review

3 things you should know about the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card

Here’s a breakdown of the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card.

    1. Sign-up bonus could pay for your business trip

With the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card you’ll earn 90,000 bonus points after spending $8,000 on purchases during the first 3 months from account opening.

Those 90,000 bonus points are worth $1,125 when redeemed for travel through Chase Travel.

You might be able to get an even better value from the sign-up bonus if you transfer your points to one of Chase’s hotel or airline travel partners.

That could be enough to cover your next business trip.

    2. 3x points for bonus categories

The Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card charges a $95 annual fee.

But you’ll earn three points per $1 on the first $150,000 you spend each account anniversary year on combined purchases in some business categories, including …

    • Travel expenses
    • Shipping purchases
    • Online advertising purchases on search engines and social media sites
    • Internet, cable and phone services

You’ll only earn a rewards rate of one point per $1 on other purchases, though.

    3. Travel benefits are nothing to get excited about

The Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card might have a fantastic rewards program and a low annual fee, but it won’t win any style points with luxury travelers.

There’s no travel credit, airport lounge membership, Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee credit (or many other perks).

It’s just a basic travel rewards card for business owners that comes with standard features like cellphone protection, trip cancellation or interruption insurance, and a $0 foreign transaction fee.

Understanding your points and redemption options

Chase Ultimate Rewards is one of the most valuable rewards programs because there are so many ways to use your points.

Among several options, here are some standout ways to redeem your Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

    • Redeeming them directly through your account
    • Combining your points with another Chase Ultimate Rewards credit card
    • Transferring your points to a Chase Ultimate Rewards hotel or airline partner

The simplest way to use your Chase Ultimate Rewards points is to redeem them directly through your account. You could redeem them for 1 cent each toward cash back or gift cards. But we recommend you redeem them for travel, because then they’d be worth 1.25 cents each.

Even though the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card is a business credit card, you could also move your points to your personal credit card under the Chase Ultimate Rewards umbrella. For example, if you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, you could move your points to that card and redeem them for travel. That way, they’d be worth 1.5 cents each.

Chase Ultimate Rewards also teams up with more than a dozen hotel and airline transfer partners, some of which may offer better redemption values.

Do you need a business to get the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card?

The Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card is intended for small-business owners. Exactly who counts as a business owner may be broader than you think, though.

Sole proprietors and independent contractors like freelancers and rideshare drivers who may not necessarily consider themselves business owners may also qualify. A business card can be a helpful tool for all types of business owners — as well as being another avenue to earn rewards, it can also help you separate your personal and business purchases.

Just keep in mind that you’re personally on the hook for repaying whatever your company spends, even if it goes out of business.

What are the best business credit cards?

If the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card is a good fit for your business, you might also be interested in one of these other business credit cards.

Great 80k UR signup bonus + earn rate

    Credit Karma Member

If you're already in the Chase Ultimate Rewards ecosystem, this is a great card to earn some extra points (80k offer at the time of writing this review). No statement credit bonuses to offset the annual fee like the Sapphire Reserve card, but the 3x earn rate on travel and dining beats out the Sapphire Preferred plus you get 3x back on shipping, advertising, and phone/cable/internet bills. You also get many of the same travel/hotel coverage and perks as the Reserve Preferred card, with the added bonus of some pretty stellar cell phone protection coverage. If you have any kind of small business, this is an amazing card. If not, it's basically a Sapphire Preferred (same annual fee) with slightly better earn rates on travel and dining and some added perks for stuff you probably won't use too much.

    Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® review

    Updated October 29, 2024

This date may not reflect recent changes in individual terms.

What to know about the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®

    High annual fee

This premium airline credit card boasts plenty of perks, but they come at a cost — a $595 annual fee. With an annual fee that high, you’ll want to make sure you’ll actually use this card’s higher-value benefits before applying.

    Complimentary Admirals Club membership

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® includes a full Admirals Club airport lounge membership for the primary cardholder, and authorized users can also access the lounges.

American Airlines values this benefit at $850, so it’s a valuable one if you were planning to purchase or renew an Admirals Club membership elsewhere. On the other hand, this perk might not mean much if you don’t regularly visit airport lounges or regularly fly American Airlines or its partners.

Great sign-up bonus, but at a cost

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® offers new cardholders 70,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after spending $7,000 on purchases in the first 3 months after opening the card.

This is a phenomenal sign-up bonus — even for a premium travel card.

Limited opportunities to earn points elsewhere

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®’s sign-up bonus can help you build up your miles balance quickly, but your non-American Airlines purchases won’t earn as many miles. The card offers 10 miles per $1 spent on hotels booked through AAdvantagehotels.com and on eligible car rentals booked through American Airlines as well as four miles per $1 spent on eligible American Airlines purchases, but just one mile per $1 spent on other purchases.

If you’re not wedded to American Airlines for your travel, a flexible travel card may offer more bang for your mile.

    Plenty of travel perks

Even if you don’t have airline status, you’ll still get plenty of perks from the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®.

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® comes with early boarding and access to priority check-in and security lanes. It also includes one free checked bag for you and up to eight travel companions.

But keep in mind that these perks are already included with American Airlines elite status. If you already have elite status or plan to earn it with this card, these benefits may not be as valuable to you. But you’ll still get a statement credit of up to $120 for your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee every four years. And the card has no foreign transaction fees, which could come in handy when you’re traveling abroad.

Understanding your points and redemption options

AAdvantage miles can be redeemed for travel on American Airlines, American Eagle®, oneworld® and partner airlines. American Airlines uses a region-based award chart, so the amount of miles required to redeem for a flight depends on factors including where you fly, seat type and date.

You can also redeem your miles for hotel stays, car rentals, seat upgrades or to plan a vacation through American Airlines’ partners.

    Is this card worth it?

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® might only make sense for frequent American Airlines fliers. The card’s various perks will likely appeal to frequent travelers who want extra comfort at the airport. But with an annual fee of $595, this card is probably best for those who travel at least once or twice a month.

But if you prefer to get value from travel cards by redeeming miles for award flights, you’ll probably want to look elsewhere. This card simply doesn’t offer much mile-earning potential thanks to its limited bonus categories and decent, but not unique, sign-up bonus.

Not sure this is the card for you? Consider these alternatives.

If you’re not sure you’d take full advantage of the perks that come with the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®, you might want to consider one of these cards instead.

    Love this card

    Credit Karma Member

So what makes this card better than other AA-branded credit cards is that whatever you buy on this card goes toward your Admiral's Club points. I did not know this until I was travelling with a friend and she had another AA-branded card BUT she told me the only way she accrues AA Admiral's Club points is by buying AA plane tix. If she goes to a restaurant and uses her card, she doesn't get points. I got this card with an 818 TU credit score and $45,100 credit limit (my highest CL).

    Horrible Dispute Process

    Credit Karma Member

I have the American Airlines Executive Mastercard with Citi. I would like to start off saying that I have an 850 credit score and have many other high fee cards because I travel very often with work. I have never missed a payment an consider myself to be an excellent customer. Because I fly American, I thought it would make sense for me to get this card. I enjoy the Admiral’s Club benefits, but that’s about it. I had a dispute with a merchant charge in late August. I immediately reached out to Citi. I got zero response from them, and in about a week the dispute was closed with no reason. I called in and I was told that the dispute was not able to be reopened and I that I needed to email a certain department. This call took about 15 minutes and I was forced to talk to several different departments, one that I strongly feel was not even in the US. I sent an email to the department that I was told to do so. I submitted supporting documents. Again, after about 10 days I called in to see what was happening. I got no response that the email had been received. When I called in I was told that I would get a response in just a few more days, which I did not. This call also took about 15 minutes and I had to talk to two departments. At this point I was getting annoyed. This kind of card with a $595 fee should have better customer service. I called for the third time and I was told that the second dispute was also closed with no correspondence from Citi. I asked why and was told that there were no notes, and they could do nothing to help me. They then offered (bargained) with me to take a $250 payment when the disputed charge was for $396. I was furious. I felt like they were implying I was trying to get something for free, when the charge was 100% not authorized by me. I told them I wanted to cancel all my Citi accounts and they did not even try to save my business. This call took 51 minutes, four departments and again I was sent out of the US. To make this situation even more comical, they applied a $250 credit to a charge that wasn’t even disputed. I have had disputes with Chase and American Express with zero issue. The responses I got from them were more of “we are sorry this happened, we will credit your account right away.” With Citi they basically implied that I was the one that was wrong and that I should be grateful for the $250 “Gift.” I have already paid my yearly fee, but rest assured I will not keep my accounts open for the next year.
